Overweight, Obesity and Morbidly Obese

What do these terms reference? These terms refer to an excess in total weight and body fat ranging from moderately high to extremely high and interfering with the health or normal function of a person. All three terms identify specific ranges of weight that have been shown to increase the likelihood of certain diseases and other health problems. Healthy bodies require the smallest amount of body fat possible for proper functioning.

The Body Mass Index (BMI)

The BMI is the most useful way of measuring if a person is overweight, obese or morbidly obese.  It uses height and weight to determine a unit as an indicator of body fat, however, it does not measure body fat itself. The number generated by the BMI identifies ranges that have been proven to increase the probability of a person running a high risk of disease and illness.

BMI Ranges

Underweight = <18.5

Normal weight = 18.5–24.9

Overweight = 25–29.9

Obesity = BMI of 30–40

Morbid Obesity = BMI of 40 or higher

The weight of a person is influenced by many factors including the environment, family history, heredity, metabolism, behavior or habits, and more. Certain factors such as family history cannot be changed, but others, such as lifestyle and habits can be drastically improved.

Simple steps to help prevent being ‘overweight’ and ‘obese’

You can help prevent certain diseases and other health problems by eating a healthier diet while taking into account the calories you consume, exercising regularly and limiting the amount of time being physically inactive.

In the U.S. and the rest of the world, millions of people are overweight or obese. The higher the weight and body fat you have, the more likely you are to suffer health problems such as:

·       Cardiovascular Disease

·       High Blood Pressure

·       Type-2 Diabetes

·       Gallbladder and Kidneys Stones

·       Respiratory Problems

Achieving a healthy weight and maintaining it is a long-term challenge for most and especially those who are overweight or obese. However, it can also be an opportunity to reduce the risk of developing other serious health problems. With proper treatment and motivation, it is possible to lose weight and reduce these serious risks.
